Identify Your Asbestos: Siding

Because of its ability to fend off fire and serve as an insulator, asbestos was used in many different varieties of siding products.

Where you find it:

  • Older houses - Popular from the 1930's to 1970's as an exterior siding material.

What you should do:

Asbestos siding shingles should be treated much in the same manner as roofing shingles - if in good condition, leave them alone. If you saw, drill, or otherwise disturb the shingles, you can release the fibers into the air. Because removal of asbestos siding is lengthy and expensive, repairing broken tiles is always the preferred solution. Unless you are prepared for the investment, living with the siding as it is is not only safe, but economically wise.
