Identify Your Asbestos: Firewalls

Because of the inability for asbestos to incinerate, it was commonly used for firewalls and other fire-proofing applications.

Where you find it:

• Basements - underneath fireplaces providing fire protection.
• Walls - in mult-unit dwellings serving as a fire protection device.
• Any other place that fire protection may be necessary.

What you should do:

As with all other installations of asbestos, removal is only necessary if the material is crumbling or deteriorating naturally. However, because this type of installation is difficult to cover, removal may be the best solution. Find out more about safe asbestos abatement.
